CEN/TC 428 "ICT Professionalism and Digital Competences" has released a White Paper on how standards on ICT professionalism can support European AI policies to embed ICT professional competence within the development of AI systems.
With legislation on Artificial Intelligence progressing in the European Parliament, and in the context of the European Year of Skills, there are many ongoing discussions on how to use AI responsibly and on how to address the technological skills gap that Europe is currently facing. The new White Paper by CEN/TC 428 takes stock of these important debates to holistically look at the role of ICT Professionalism in Artificial Intelligence, and how it can be supported using European standardization.
CEN/TC 428 "ICT Professionalism and Digital Competences" has been developing standardization deliverables in ICT professionalism since 2014. Examples of these standards and deliverables include EN 16234-1:2019 “e-Competence Framework (e-CF) - A common European Framework for ICT Professionals in all sectors” and CEN/TS 17834:2022 “European Professional Ethics Framework for the ICT Profession”.
Building on this experience, in the White Paper CEN/TC 428 offers a series of recommendations to better connect IT professionalism with AI, such as:
to develop an AI standardization roadmap coherent with ICT Professionalism standardization for the construction of new AI-specific standards and for the revision of existing ICT standards in support of AI-specific standards;
to ensure that new AI standards will be consistent with ICT standards, reinforcing their sustainability and applicability across the ICT profession and related organizational structures.
